Martin Luther King Jr. Day

“We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.”
– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today we mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the decades that have passed since his tragic death we have seen genuine progress in his cause, but there is still more to do.

The manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination, as Dr. King put it, no longer legally shackle Black Americans.

Still however, freedom is not fully realized in our communities of color. Today’s obstacles of urban decay and indifference, and economic despair and dependency, seem equally intractable. A new caste system, created by politicians for their advantage and cemented by government policies, now holds people down.

But there is hope. New voices are claiming new ground of growth and opportunity for the next generation. One of them, State Senator Elbert Guillory of Louisiana, captures this so poignantly in this video statement.

To honor the legacy of Dr. King, let us be resolved to make this a day when we take up the cause of liberty and justice and opportunity for all – and the hard work necessary to achieve it.
